Policy on the sale of gas appliances and gas spares
There are no legal restrictions on the sale of gas appliances or gas spares, although there are legal restrictions on the fitting, commissioning, maintenance and repair of these products.
Whilst we do not claim to act as the industry’s policeman, we would like to do our part in supporting safe practice in the sector. We operate a strict trade only policy, but by no means all of our trade customers are qualified and registered gas engineers.
We understand that there are many trade customers who, whilst not necessarily gas safe registered themselves, have a legitimate business need to purchase gas appliances. These include other merchants, local authorities, housing associations, housebuilders, hotel and restaurant chains, universities, government departments and a wide range of other bona fide organisations and businesses. When selling gas appliances we proceed on an assumption of good faith - unless we have reason to believe otherwise, we assume that these customers will engage a suitably qualified and registered engineer to fit the product. However, if any of our staff have reason to believe that a customer is purchasing a gas appliance and intending to have it fitted by a non-registered person, then we shall decline to process the sale until we have credible reassurance that our concerns were groundless.
There are very many less circumstances where it is likely that a gas spare will be purchased by a customer who is not gas-safe registered. With this category of product, we seek explicit assurance that the product will be installed by a gas safe registered engineer. The simplest way to achieve this is for the engineer to present a valid current gas safe card at the point of purchase. However, we recognise that some engineers may wish to send an unregistered colleague to collect a part on their behalf. Under these circumstances, we would ask the registered engineer to contact us to make arrangements for the collection. Should this be a regular occurrence, and the customer is an account holder, we can flag the account to identify named individuals authorised by the engineer to collect spares on their behalf.
We appreciate that this policy may sometimes create situations which are temporarily inconvenient, for which we apologise. Our approach will be based on the principle of putting safety first – ahead of commercial considerations or temporary convenience. The directors and senior management will support any staff member who, in good faith, refuses to serve a customer with a gas appliance or gas spare under the terms of this policy – even if their concerns turned out to be groundless.
